How Budgets Are Calculated

Student budgets can only include costs of attendance for the individual student. Additional living allowances for married students or students with children are not included.

Following is a brief description of how these budgets are derived. Budgets are based on a two-semester academic year and vary according to academic classification and residency status:

  1. Tuition/Fees
Fees for undergraduate students are based on an average of 30 credit hours of 0-4999 level courses. Graduate tuition fees are based on 24 class hours from 5000-9999. Students enrolled in professional programs in dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and certain MBA programs pay block fees.
  2. Books, Course Materials, Supplies, Equipment
Costs are determined by using the Education Data average cost of textbooks survey for the total cost of books and supplies in addition to estimates for materials, supplies, equipment, and technology.
  3. Transportation
On- and off-campus transportation costs allow for three roundtrips to Miami by personal automobile per two semesters.
  4. Living Expenses
Housing costs for undergraduate students living on campus reflect the average of the following costs: average on-campus, air-conditioned double rooms with refrigerator and utilities and the average of rates quoted by local apartments with allowances for utilities. On-campus graduate costs are based on an average of rents for available UF graduate housing. Off-campus graduate costs are based on the biannual Law Student cost survey, completed in fall of 2022. This includes rent and utilities for 10 months. Food costs are based on UF Dining’s 7 Day Unlimited Meal Plan for on- or off-campus students and/or the 5 Day unlimited meal plan for students living at home.
  5. Miscellaneous Personal Expenses
The personal budget is based on the U.S. Department of Labor’s established personal and clothing costs for one person. This includes laundry, toiletries, cell phone, and minor miscellaneous expenses.
  6. Federal Student Loan Fees
Cost of the federal student loan origination fee – only students who borrow will incur loan origination fees.
