The Robert I. Lufrano Scholarship was established in honor of Robert I. Lufrano, MD, who was the CEO and Chairman of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Board of Directors from 2004 to 2011. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide funds for graduate students and undergraduate students to conduct health disparities research in community-based settings with a focus on racial/ethnic minorities, individuals with low family incomes, and/or the medically underserved. The funds can be used only to help fund research projects that have implications for reducing and/or eliminating health disparities. Scholarship amounts are $500, $1,000, and $1,500. A maximum of four scholarships will be awarded per year, pending availability of funds.
Applicants for a Robert I. Lufrano Scholarship must have 3.5 or higher GPA, and applications must include the following materials: (a) a curriculum vitae; (b) a one-page description of the research that will be conducted; (c) a one-page or less itemized budget for the research; and (d) an application cover sheet that includes the applicant’s name, classification (e.g., sophomore, first-year graduate student), major/department and college, and email address.
Application deadlines for a Robert I. Lufrano Scholarship are March 15th and September 15th each year, and scholarship winners will be announced March 29th and September 29th, respectively. A committee of at least three reviewers will select the scholarship recipient(s). Applications should be submitted to Dr. Carolyn M. Tucker, Endowed Chair in Health Disparities Research, via email (cmtucker@ufl.edu).
